What is it?
A force sensor measures the magnitude (and sometimes the direction) of force applied to it. In robotics, force sensors range from cheap strain gauges to expensive 6-axis force-torque sensors used at the wrist of robotic arms.
How it works
Most force sensors are built from strain gauges — tiny resistive elements bonded to a flexible structure. When force deforms the structure, the gauge's electrical resistance changes proportionally. A Wheatstone-bridge circuit converts the resistance shift into a voltage, which is digitised and reported. Six-axis sensors stack multiple strain elements to read forces and torques on every axis.
