What it is
A gear train is a series of meshing gears that transmits rotation from a motor to an output. As gears mesh, a small gear driving a large one turns the large one slower but with more torque (and vice versa). Chain several stages and you can achieve big transformations. The overall gear ratio is set by the tooth counts — driven teeth ÷ driving teeth — and it multiplies torque and divides speed by that factor.

What gear trains do
Reduce speed / multiply torque — the most common job in robots: a reduction gear train turns a fast, weak motor into a slow, strong joint drive.
