The story
Wang Xingxing — Unitree's founder — built his first quadruped robot as a master's-degree project in 2013 in a tiny lab at Shanghai University. He posted videos of it walking. Investors found him.
Unitree was incorporated in 2016. The first product, Laikago, shipped in 2017 at roughly $30k — already half of what comparable quadrupeds cost. Each generation since has cut the price further while improving capability. The Unitree A1 (2020) was $10k. The Go1 (2021) was $2,700. The Go2 (2023-2024) is around $1,600-3,500 depending on configuration.
The product lineup
Go2 — the consumer/research quadruped. Roughly dog-sized. Lidar version available. Excellent SDK for research use.
B2 — the industrial quadruped. Larger, longer battery, IP67-rated, payload of 20 kg. Targets inspection markets.
H1 — the bipedal humanoid, announced 2023, shipping in volume from 2024. 1.8 m tall, 47 kg. Holds the world record (3.3 m/s) for bipedal walking speed.
G1 — a smaller, lower-cost humanoid, around $16k, aimed squarely at research and education.
Why Unitree's price disruption matters
Boston Dynamics' Spot retails for $75-150k. Unitree's equivalent (the B2) is around $20-30k. Atlas (Boston Dynamics, humanoid) isn't even sold to the public. Unitree's H1 is.
This means university labs in India, Brazil, and Africa can afford to do robotics research with proper hardware for the first time. It means startups can prototype on real legged robots without burning a seed round on hardware. It means the next decade of legged-robotics research papers will mostly be done on Unitree platforms — which compounds China's position in the field.
The technical pattern
Unitree doesn't lead in any single technology. They lead in integration cost. Their motors are good but not best-in-class. Their controllers are good but not state-of-the-art. Their software stack is competent.
What they do brilliantly: vertical integration, manufacturing scale, and aggressive cost optimisation. They make their own joints, their own batteries, their own electronics. They build at automotive volumes in factories near Shanghai. Every component is engineered for cost from day one.
Boston Dynamics builds the best robots money can buy. Unitree builds robots most people can afford. Both stories matter.
Where they fit in the global race
China has explicitly identified humanoid robotics as a strategic priority. Government subsidies, fast-tracked safety approvals, and an enormous domestic manufacturing base mean Unitree (and rivals like Deep Robotics, AgiBot, and UBTech) will likely set the global volume floor for legged robots through this decade.
