Pragyan (Chandrayaan-3 lunar rover)

Pragyan was India's first robot on the Moon. A 26 kg, six-wheeled rover that landed near the lunar south pole in August 2023 and made India the first country to soft-land that far south.
The robot concept: Pragyan was India's first robot on the Moon.
Difficulty 3/5 Β· ClassroomPragyan β the Sanskrit word for "wisdom" β was India's first robot on the Moon. A 26 kg, six-wheeled rover that landed near the lunar south pole on 23 August 2023 and made India the first country to soft-land that far south. The fourth country ever to soft-land on the Moon, after the USSR, the USA, and China.

Think of it like a household object that does the same job β the underlying idea is the same, just adapted for robots.
Why it matters
Without pragyan (chandrayaan-3 lunar rover), many robot systems in robotics simply couldn't work.
Pragyan β the Sanskrit word for "wisdom" β was India's first robot on the Moon. A 26 kg, six-wheeled rover that landed near the lunar south pole on 23 August 2023 and made India the first country to soft-land that far south. The fourth country ever to soft-land on the Moon, after the USSR, the USA, and China.
What Pragyan is, mechanically
A small rover, roughly the size of a microwave oven. Six wheels, each independently driven by a brushless motor. Two solar panels providing ~50 watts in daylight. A passive thermal control system to survive lunar daytime (+120Β°C).
The wheels can move at up to 1 cm/sec β slow by design, because the rover can't be retrieved if it falls, and lunar regolith is unpredictable.
What instruments it carried
Two main scientific payloads:
Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) β fires a laser pulse at the lunar soil, then reads the spectrum of light emitted from the vaporised material. Identifies elements. Confirmed sulphur, aluminium, iron, calcium, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon, and oxygen in lunar south-polar soil β the first direct confirmation.
Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) β a longer-baseline elemental analyser using radioactive sources to bombard the soil. Confirmed and refined the LIBS results.
The lander (Vikram, the platform that brought Pragyan down) carried four additional instruments studying lunar seismicity, surface thermal properties, plasma, and a passive laser retroreflector for distance measurements from Earth.
The mission timeline
- 23 August 2023, 18:04 IST β Vikram touched down at 69.37Β°S. Touchdown was televised live in India, watched by over 80 million viewers. The largest live-stream audience of any space event ever.
- 23 August, evening β Pragyan deployed from Vikram, rolled onto the lunar surface.
- 24 August to 2 September β Pragyan and Vikram operated through one lunar day (~14 Earth days), drove ~100 metres total, returned scientific data.
- 3 September β Both spacecraft put into hibernation as lunar night approached.
- September-October β ISRO attempted to wake the spacecraft after lunar dawn. They did not respond. Mission considered complete.
Why this matters more than the headline
Two things make Pragyan a real milestone:
The south pole landing site. Most lunar landings have been near the equator (it's flatter, warmer, easier). The south pole is rough, cold, and shadowed β but it likely has water ice in permanently-shadowed craters. Future lunar bases will be built there. Pragyan was the first robot to scientifically characterise soil at this site.
The cost. Chandrayaan-3 cost about βΉ615 crore (~$75 million). The Hollywood film Avatar: The Way of Water, released the same year, cost $400 million. ISRO did a Moon mission for less than the marketing budget of a sci-fi movie.
This frugal-engineering culture is one of ISRO's defining traits, and one of the reasons India can compete in space robotics despite a fraction of NASA's budget.
Pragyan was a one-mission rover. The future of Indian space robotics looks bigger β see the news in ISRO's OSPREY arm catches a satellite mid-orbit.
Ask R2 Co-pilot anything you didn't understand about Pragyan (Chandrayaan-3 lunar rover). It'll explain it plainly.
