It works on the BMW assembly line. The factory pays Figure by the part.
In one sentence
Figure 02 is the first humanoid robot to actually get paid for factory work — and it talks to you in OpenAI voice.
The wow factor
Three things that make Figure 02 genuinely impressive.
First humanoid to do real factory work alongside humans (BMW Spartanburg).
Microsoft, OpenAI, Bezos, and NVIDIA all invested in the 2024 round.
Conversational voice powered by OpenAI GPT models, embedded in the robot.
How it works
A step-by-step breakdown, in plain English.
- 1Six RGB cameras give 360° vision of the workspace.
- 2A custom neural network maps sensor input to motor commands.
- 3OpenAI-powered language model handles conversation and instructions.
- 416 actuators move limbs and torso; battery swap keeps it running shifts.
- 5Continuous learning improves performance from every shift's data.

The full story
Figure AI was founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock with the goal of building general-purpose humanoid robots. Figure 02, unveiled in August 2024, is the company's second-generation robot. It stands 168 cm tall, weighs 70 kg, and is equipped with 16 actuators, six RGB cameras, OpenAI-powered conversation, and 3× the on-board compute of its predecessor. Figure 02 is already deployed at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly plant. Figure has raised over $1.5 billion at a $2.6 billion valuation.
